Emulate the next 'it' person and join a club that will inspire you to push yourself into a land of color, texture, glamor - Fashion, It is just plain fun.
Diversity is the key for 2010 suggests Damien Carey, artistic director of Joico Laboratories. "There will always be people who like long hair and those who like short hair, so cuts and styles will be adapted to the individual."
But which short and long styles make the cut? So to speak. My client desperately wanted to know. I mean, she said, what IS in?
... Remember the episode of I love Lucy where Lucy goes to Paris and she wants Ricky to buy her an expensive designer dress? Ricky plays a trick on his wife and Ethel and says that as a favor to him "thee famous" designer has allowed him to purchase two one of a kind dresses. No one, even in Paris has them yet. Ethel and Lucy had NEVER seen anything like them before. And made from burlap! Cutting edge.
Over joyed, Lucy and Ethel parade around in these dresses like they were fresh off the runway- and pulled it off - they looked fantastic! Until they found out they were the brunt of Ricky's joke. They then became self conscious and right before your eyes, turned into ridiculous, burlap sac wearing Americans. Well, I thought they looked beautiful.
So the answer to what is in? It is confidence. If you own it, then you are "IN."
That said, the playing field for 2010 is wide open. Pixi cuts with an urban twist. whimsical romantic hair, piecey layers, funky bangs, sleek asymmetry, imperfect updo's with glitzy accessories- thank you etsy. For men- Brad Pitt is not going anywhere and class is back, thank you Mad Men. Tweens- Angelina Joli, yep she still gets huge play and Justin Bieber, a fifteen year old singer with hair that is basically all pushed forward- Very technical.
I spoke with two sixteen year old girls who tell me they just want long red or black hair. That they do not pay attention to celebrity. When pressed, like, who if you had to pick one celeb would be someone you would look up to for fashion and hair, they tell me Angelina Joli- she is the shit.
I also had a little chin wag with Vancouver stylist Stephanie Hardy from Maude Salon. She informed me that collar bones are in. It is all about the collar bone.
In Victoria, B.C. the trend seems to be right on track with the rest of the world, we have collar bones. And I happen to know that Victoria is leaning toward the romantic, Mad Men fifty's style, Vidal Sassoon inspired do's are popping up every where, even 1920's flapper stuff is making an appearance.
First and foremost, most stylist's will agree, start with a great cut. Everything else is just icing on the cake. There are styles that require time and patience, higher maintenance, ie; roller sets, blow drying, flat iron, product. Live with it or don't. Usually curly haired can get away with the least amount of fussing, but the good cut with allow for a great look, all day, everyday. Product and fussing are for that special night out.
We have our own style celebrities in Victoria. The ones who seem to be a step ahead of the rest, who have the guts to try something different. It may be a great look, or not, but if served up with confidence people will buy anything.
So what's hot for 2010? 1920, just rolled out of bed, brangelina, 1950... Pick one, own it, you're "in".
